Planning approval for former Duke’s School site in Alnwick

Planning consent has been granted by Northumberland County Council for the sensitive redevelopment of the former Duke’s Middle School site in Alnwick.

The Grade II-listed former school building, which has stood vacant since its closure in 2016, will be brought back into long-term use through a carefully designed conversion to 13 high-quality apartments. In addition, 46 new homes will be created within the surrounding site, delivering a mix of houses, apartments and bungalows that respond to local housing needs.

The plans also include thoughtfully landscaped open spaces, improved access and parking arrangements, and enhancements that respect the architectural legacy of the historic building.

Throughout the planning process, Northumberland Estates has worked collaboratively with Northumberland County Council’s planning team and the local community to ensure that the proposals both safeguard the heritage asset and make a positive contribution to the town of Alnwick. Bringing this landmark building back into productive use will help secure its future and provide much-needed new homes in the area.

The property is an important historic asset for the town but has stood vacant since 2016. This application brings substantial benefits and new opportunities, representing the best outcome for the site’s long-term future.
