After years of careful restoration, planning, and anticipation, Bailiffgate Hotel welcomed its first guests on 28 May.
Originally built as the Commissioner’s House and later serving as the Duchess’s School from 1888, the buildings have undergone extensive redevelopment. The project has transformed the site into a luxury hotel, preserving key architectural features while introducing modern amenities.
The hotel offers 48 individually designed rooms and 14 suites, spanning the Georgian-era building and a contemporary new extension. Guests can enjoy views of Alnwick Castle, the town, or the surrounding countryside.
The hotel’s main restaurant, Motte & Bailey, is led by Executive Head Chef Paul Blakey and serves modern British cuisine using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Additional options include:
Commissioner’s Bar – located in the original building
Garden Room – serving afternoon tea
Mrs Bowmaker’s Room – private dining space named after the school’s first headmistress
Construction was overseen by Development Director David Straughan, who has now handed over to General Manager Bernard Bloodworth, a former pupil of the Duchess’s School. The hotel team has strong local ties, with recruitment continuing across departments.
During the build, over 250 local tradespeople contributed, alongside more than 200 weeks of apprenticeship placements. The hotel has created 70 permanent roles and remains committed to local procurement and collaboration with regional tourism partners to support Northumberland’s economy.
Adjacent to Alnwick Castle and close to the Northumberland coast, Bailiffgate Hotel is positioned as a premium destination for both domestic and international visitors.
