Bailiffgate Hotel, a stunning five-story property in the heart of Alnwick, opened in May 2025. This unique hotel blends historic charm with contemporary style, connecting a beautifully preserved Grade II Georgian schoolhouse to a sleek modern extension.

Set within the historic grounds of the former Duchess High School, the hotel enjoys a prime location overlooking the iconic Barbican entrance to Alnwick Castle. With 48 bedrooms, suites, and apartments, as well as a stylish bar, restaurant, and private dining room, Bailiffgate Hotel offers accommodation and experiences to suit every guest.

Steeped in history, the property was originally acquired in 1780 by the first Duke of Northumberland, who replaced the earlier structure with Bailiffgate House for his commissioner, James Dormer. It remained the home of the Estate Commissioners until the death of the third Duke in 1847. In 1888, the house became part of the Duchess’s School, founded in 1808 by Duchess Julia, serving the community until the school’s closure in 2016.

Today, Bailiffgate Hotel preserves its heritage while offering modern comforts and a warm welcome – making it the perfect base to explore Alnwick and its historic surroundings.

“Staff friendly and attentive. Room outstanding. Food is amazing. Loads of choice for breakfast. Will definitely be back”
