Northumberland Estates is committed to the long-term stewardship of approximately 80,000 acres, and we recognise that the agricultural land under our stewardship is a special resource, with the majority dedicated to farming.

Approximately 33,000 acres are managed directly by our in-house team, comprising a mix of arable and hill land. Of this, 7,000 acres are used for arable farming, while the remaining land is primarily lowland and upland grazing.

In addition to our in-hand land, we collaborate with over 100 tenant farmers who manage the rest of the Estate’s agricultural holdings. Many have farmed the same land for generations, maintaining a tradition of responsible and sustainable farming practices.

Percy Farms

Located at Ratcheugh Farm near Alnwick, Percy Farms is Northumberland Estates’ in-hand arable enterprise. Covering 6,500 acres (2,600 ha) within a seven-mile farming radius, the farm grows a diverse range of crops including winter wheat, barley, oilseed rape, spring barley, spring beans, oats, and environmental break crops.

Sustainable and Innovative Arable Farming

Percy Farms is a leading example of how modern farming can coexist with conservation. Approximately 80% of the arable acreage supports an award-winning grey partridge conservation project, enhancing local wildlife. The entire farm participates in conservation schemes such as Countryside Stewardship Mid-tiers and the Sustainable Farming Incentive, promoting biodiversity and sustainable farming practices.

Innovation is at the heart of Percy Farms. GPS-guided equipment ensures precise application of sprays, fertilizers, and other inputs, while soil mapping and yield mapping enable accurate nutrient management for lime, phosphate, and other essential elements—supporting soil health and crop productivity.

The farm has recently introduced a B&B cattle enterprise, providing organic nutrients to the arable rotation and making efficient use of livestock buildings. Animal welfare and biosecurity are non-negotiable, safeguarding both enterprise performance and neighbouring farms.

At Percy Farms, innovation and environmental stewardship work together to keep the land productive, sustainable, and ecologically rich for future generations.

Park Farm

Park Farm spans 2,800 acres, including 1,750 acres of grazable land within Hulne Park. The farm supports a sustainable sheep and cattle enterprise, with a strong emphasis on extensive, efficient, and resilient farming. Our grazing management is central to this approach, delivering benefits for livestock, the environment, and wildlife.

We run Romney X ewes across the historic parkland, alongside a herd of stabiliser cattle thriving on a pasture-based system without additional concentrate feed. A small flock of Scottish Blackface sheep is also managed on the moorland.

Managed under CSS HT and SFI schemes, we apply no fertilisers to grazing fields. Our mob-grazing system, using both sheep and cattle, improves soil health and enhances pasture productivity.

At Park Farm, sustainable farming and biodiversity go hand in hand, ensuring Hulne Park remains productive, ecologically rich, and historically preserved.
