The public has open access to many thousands of acres of land owned and managed by the Estate across Northumberland and Scotland.

We provide and maintain nearly 300 miles of public rights of way as well as other paths and routes and are delighted that so many members of the public visit and enjoy this land.

Explore Scenic Walks and Trails in Alnwick

Alnwick lies in the heart of Northumberland’s stunning countryside, surrounded by the historic Capability Brown-designed parkland of Alnwick Castle. Northumberland Estates has created several circular walking routes to encourage visitors and the local community to explore this beautiful area.

These routes vary in length and are clearly waymarked, making them suitable for walkers of all abilities. Please note that some paths are permissive routes rather than established public rights of way and may not appear on Ordnance Survey maps.

Thanks to the permissive access provided by Northumberland Estates, these routes are available for everyone to enjoy. Download maps of each walking route below to plan your visit and discover the scenic landscapes around Alnwick Castle.

Respect the Countryside

Many of the walking routes pass through farmland, so we ask all visitors to respect local farmers and follow the Countryside Code. Stick to marked footpaths, close gates behind you, keep dogs under strict control, and take your litter home.

Following these simple guidelines helps ensure your safety, protects wildlife, and preserves the natural beauty of Northumberland countryside walks for everyone to enjoy.

Check Route Availability Before You Walk

At times, Northumberland Estates may need to temporarily close some walking routes for maintenance or seasonal reasons. We recommend checking this website before setting out to ensure that all paths are open and accessible for your Northumberland countryside walk.

Hulne Park

Hulne Park, once Percy family hunting grounds, is a popular walking route open daily from 11am until 4pm each day when the gates will be closed.

At certain times Hulne Park may be closed to visitors, please check the website or call the Estate Office on 01665 510777. Dogs and cyclists are not permitted.
