An exciting new project will see developers Northumberland Estates working with leading charity Age UK North Tyneside, and health and social care providers to create a state-of-the-art residential development for people in later life on North Tyneside which could become a flagship for future schemes.

Located at Backworth Park, the groups vision is to design and build a multi-generational living and wellbeing complex capable of offering a wide range of services to support people in later life and to help them make more of life too, by creating a real interactive community.

Included within the Ageing Well Village will be a range of housing options from single occupancy bedrooms to an extra care scheme alongside some two-bedroom apartments, bungalows and three-bedroom houses for those wishing to downsize. Also on site will be an integrated health and social care hub with therapy areas, rehabilitation facilities, consultation rooms, a dining area, staff facilities and a wellbeing hub offering spa facilities, small shops, a restaurant and café and a communal lounge.

Designed to give a village feeling the site will also include a pre-school nursery and incorporate green space, with community gardens, and outdoor interactive leisure zones all with accessibility at the heart of the design. A small office building will also be located on site with office space, meeting, and training facilities.

Sustainable development will be key using sustainable and locally sourced materials, incorporating green roofs, with a green ethos of living with nature to further health and wellbeing throughout, which encourages residents to contribute to and to conserve their outdoor environment.

Says David Straughan, Development Director with Northumberland Estates

"This is an exciting project which combines the knowledge and experience of some of the major players in housing, research, along with health and social care services for people in later life with our building expertise to create something which is really ground-breaking. It will also add greatly to the community of Backworth Park enhancing the range of facilities available in the area while creating more community green space.”

Backworth Park is an ideal location for this development with existing services surrounding the site and ample pedestrian, cycle and transport linkages enabling natural integration and connectivity with the wider area.

A local community engagement on the proposals was launched this month.
