Northumberland Estates recognises the role of sport in our local communities and supports several sports clubs, groups and organisations through financial and non-financial assistance.

Past projects include land donated to Northumberland County Council for the construction of Willowburn Leisure Centre which brought a new swimming pool and sports facilities to Alnwick. Land was also donated to Longhoughton Rangers Football Club for their football academy and Alnwick Town football club has benefited from financial support for many years. Alnwick Castle Golf Club is the latest club to benefit from a significant investment which facilitated the development of a new clubhouse as well as other facilities.

We are also proud to host sporting events such as the Northumberland School Games and the NE Youth Clay Pigeon Shoot which delivers new opportunities for participation as well as a sense of community in the local area.

Chatton Village Hall

For many rural communities the Village Hall is valuable commodity. Northumberland Estates has been able to assist many community projects by granting long term leases for properties and sports facilities owned by the Estate. This has enabled local committees and clubs to successfully apply for much needed grant funding to upgrade and improve facilities.

When the primary school in Chatton closed, the village asked Northumberland Estates if it could be converted into a community facility rather than sold into private ownership. The Estate was happy to agree and continues to fund the upkeep of the building while facilities were upgraded following a successful application for grant funding.

Alnwick Castle Golf Club

A new clubhouse at Alnwick Castle Golf Club was one of several improvements made possible by a £1.5 million investment from Northumberland Estates.

The renovation and refurbishment plans, which started in September 2021, include a new clubhouse, changing block facilities and new dedicated access via Rugley Road. A new greenkeepers store and compound have also been built at the stunning 18-hole parkland golf course on the outskirts of Alnwick in Northumberland. The Club hopes to capitalise on the investment by introducing new membership categories, expanding the events programme and using the hospitality areas for social events and functions.

Northumberland School Games

Over 500 young people from schools around Northumberland took part in a School Games Live event at Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Garden to celebrate the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The sports festival aimed to inspire the next generation of young people to enjoy being active by taking part in a range of activities and sports. Every school in Northumberland with Key Stage 2 pupils was invited to bring a team to take part in activities such as skipping, orienteering, boccia and ball games as well as an Eco trail, Dragon’s Quest, and broomstick training.

Rothbury Golf Club

Plagued by flooding, the management committee at Rothbury Golf Club approached Northumberland Estates with an idea to move the Club House to a better site and extend the course to 18 holes. Northumberland Estates, owners of the course, not only agreed to support the scheme, but also to finance the cost of building the new club house. Today it is not only the golfers who are benefit from the upgraded facilities. The golf club has become a community facility used by the whole community for everything from birthday parties and weddings to club meetings and social events.
